#wyoming

I spent the summer of 2018 living in a log cabin in Thayne, Wyoming. I gathered my first impressions and documented all those wild animals and open spaces by painting 8in x 8in wood panels in the contemporary visual language of Instagram. I mixed in some threads from my previous paintings and the tumultuous politics of the summer of 2018. There were 32 paintings … 8 groups of 4 paintings each. Each group had a narrative. For example, for the group #pink, I showed someone an image of a growling bear that I had painted. He said that he liked it because it looked so masculine. So I changed the background to pink. In #oldcowboysandbabycowboys, I thought about the culture of the West, gender roles, and the cowboy created by our entertainment industry. And in #herds I thought about today’s bison, the bison of history, and the bison of myth and media. The 8 categories are #niceview, #herds, #camo, #tryingtoblendin, #pink, #cows, #oldcowboysandbabycowboys, and #snowday.
